Thor: The Dark World movie review

Thor: The Dark World’s plot revolves around 9 realms, convergence and Aether for an average moviegoer it hardly makes any sense unless they are also a science nerd. What matters is Thor is back on big screen with hair silkier than before and still no helmet.

Thor: The Dark World’s prologue begins with a prologue that reminds of Lord of the Rings. Good guys fighting bad guys over a powerful object that if in wrong hands will destroy the world. Bad guys who seem no longer exist and everyone is living peacefully until something happens that brings the powerful bad guy back, Voldemort anyone?

Movie begins with Loki cuffed and is presented before Odin who sends him to Dungeons, while he is locked away we finally get to see Jane Foster whose whereabouts in Avengers were still not revealed. Natlie Portman didn’t want to return for the sequel and she showed this by acting as less as possible. Apparently she was angry over Marvel hiring Game of Thrones director for the sequel and while he had perfect opportunity to kill her he did not. This would have made the movie a bit more interesting, an angry Thor raged over his beloved death would have been much better to watch.

Jane Foster’s one dimensional character is outshined by Kat Dennings’s character Darcy Lewis who is funny, a bit irritating and sarcastic. Brings death to her character and proves that she is a better actor than Natlie Portman. She is better in every scene she is and this time a new addition Ian the Intern turns out the new irritating addition to the cast as well.

In The Dark World, director Alan Taylor fully embraces the fantasy elements of Asgardian lore, skillfully deploying them to play against the Earthbound segments and playing up the difference for comic relief. Taylor knows this territory very well. His fellowship on the set of HBO’s Game of Thrones does not go unnoticed here. He brings the epic reach of that fantasy series to the otherworldly parts of this film only with a much bigger budget for painting on a much larger canvas. Thor contains some of the most gorgeously rendered images in the Marvel cinematic films to date, from the majesty of Thor’s home in Asgard to a sparkling starlit funeral over Asgardian waterfalls, both melancholy and magnificent. Then to the bleak and storm-swept landscapes of Svartalfheim, home to a race of Dark Elves.

Tom Hiddleston steals the show with his infectious charm. You can see that the grin he wears for most of the film is part out of the mischievous nature of the character, and partly from the actor’s enjoyment in playing the role. He really revels in every line, not only keeping you guessing as to Loki’s loyalties, but also providing some of the movie’s truly hilarious moments.

Most of the movie takes place in Asgard unlike the first film. The confusing part was that there was no reference to how the magic rainbow bridge that was broken in the first movie has been repaired. The action scenes are good, the final battle across London and  various other realms is inventive. It just dodges the Man of Steel, two really strong people throwing each other about. The attack on Asgard and the prison is good, and Idris Elba still manages to look bad ass in gold armor and coloured contacts. There was a couple of good cameos and a stinger you didn’t have to sit through all the credits for.

This sounds too much like a negative review that it is not, I liked the movie. It was very close to the source material unlike Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel. The main villain was underused for the talent he is, Marvel needs to have a villain whose name is not Loki.

Rating 4/5

Thor: The Dark World…Who is Malekith

Thor: The Dark World hits theaters tomorrow taking us away from Earth into other Realms where magic and science meet. This movie other than having the regular cast members has a new addition in Rogues gallery who is leader of Dark Elves Malekith played by Christopher Eccleston.

Malekith was introduced in Marvel comics during Walt Simonson’s run on The Mighty Thor in the 80s. Malekith is master of Dark Magic, probably the same magic that brought Thor on Earth in Avengers. He is fueled with revenge and wants to bring Asgard down due to an ancient rivalry and because of Thor’s affection for Earth, he threatened Midgard as well.

In his first encounter with Thor he formed an alliance between enemies of Asgard and unleashed Casket of Ancient Winters. With Malekith’s introduction again in regular Marvel Universe and Thor movie tie in books it is clear that he is more ruthless than usual with killing and slaughtering his way through all the realms. He is darker than ever and looks even angrier. His followers of Dark Elf army will kill and die on his commands.

At a point in comics he had alliance with Loki to bring back Surter. Bringing Malekith excites a lot of fans because we might get to see Surter the legendary fire demon lord in Thor threequel.

Surter or not Malekith is one powerful villain and an excellent addition to Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ll have to wait for few more days to watch him on big screen.

15 Characters To watch in 2013

Superior Spider-Man: My top fav in the list for a reason because Doc-Ock his ultimate nemesis switched bodies with Peter Parker who died in Doc’s body. Now Doc-Ock is operating as spider-man while Peter is out somewhere trying to get back in his body. It is most exciting to see how it ends up finally.Image

Cyclops: Charles Xavier’s biggest achievement turned into greatest failure and now mutantkind’s greatest hope is someone who is hated and loved for the same reason. There is a cyclops from the past trying to fix things and there is a cyclops who is here because of whatever he went through as young Scott. Lets see how this ends up. Also did I said Cyclops was right?

Aquaman: The king of Atlantis. The ultimate badass Aquaman’s status is somewhat as of Cyclops. People love him and the old school fanboys still find him laughable. But whoever falls in the second category should check out their opinions because he is now in the center of JLA and not ready to take no for an answer, not even Batman

Superman: The Trinity war begins this year Superman has always been the greatest character out there in comic world and with his return on Silver Screen he is definitely the character to look out for

Arcade: Welcome to murderworld was all he said and a dangerous game begin with stakes as high as everyone’s life. Arcade is the center of Murderworld and he is hosting a dangerous game with bunch of young heroes fighting to survive. Image
Star-Lord: Guardians of The Galaxy are back and with their big screen adventure due for next year they are going to receive the top most attention by Marvel in coming days. You should be watching what cosmic threat is plunging around this time.Image

Jean Grey: This time a young Jean Gray is back in the present timeline from the past and what she saw here is very much disturbing for her. While it brings back old memories and wounds for both Cyclops and Wolverine the knowledge about the fact that she dies a tragic death in her future keeps haunting her. What happens next is something to look out for.

Ultron: Three Words ” AGE OF ULTRON” screw Thanos, screw Loki and Screw Galactus. Ultron is the real danger here. In a continuity where he kills most of the heroes and accomplished his goal of fixing the ultimate error so now what. Ultron rules in an alternate universe and remaining heroes fight against him. If this is not the big thing then what else can be.

Pandora: Just mentioning her here so that she could finally fix all the crapfest that is going in the name of DC new 52

G.I Joe: Cobra’s one more mission failed last year and he has sworn revenge on GI Joes. He’ll be coming back with a vengeance. A major twist is already in rumors and a much delayed sequel to the disappointment called G.I Joe movie is finally coming out this year.

Thor: Much successful 2011 movie Thor’s 2nd outing will hit theaters this year in november with is being directed by Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor. Thor’s much acclaimed comic series is already in news with The God Butcher running rampant. Three ages, Three Thor and one badass villains. What else do you want?

Constantine: After bidding farewell from vertigo imprint and kid friendlier version of Constantine is here who is not foul mouth and probably doesn’t smoke. With a new era starting in history of this character it would be cool to see how DC follows the legacy.

The original Star Wars crew: what Dark Horse has in store for us in 2013 hasn’t been seen since its brilliant Dark Empire series that premiered more than 20 years ago. And even though you might think Disney will take its time with its first new Star Wars project, we wouldn’t be surprised if we see some other Star Wars projects released from Disney by end of 2013.

The Riddler: Few people can make Batman’s life hell as much as possible. He is not yet mentioned in new 52 but hints are being dropped around that he’ll be back in Batman’s life at some point in this year. Also another Arkham game will be dropping by the end of this year so it would be interesting to see if Riddler is still the mastermind or someone else takes his place.

ImageJustice League Dark: Dark Universe movie being planned by Del Toro is something I am waiting for and the team adventures taking places in darkest corners of DC Universe is treat with every issue. Image
